Username URLs get direct to /Profile

Basically when i try to click another users profile page like websiteexample.com/username i just get directed to websiteexample.com/profile which then denies that i'm allowed to look at it or something.

I've seen a number of 'fixes' (two) and one involved playing with the PHP code but I couldn't even find the file they referred to and I don't wanna risk just messing around.

The second was selecting pretty urls in the options but I've done that already.

.. so what should I do?
